Chemical Industry-Hydrochloric acid

Production processes of inorganic chemicals

  • Hydrochloric acid

Hydrochloric acid is a versatile product that is used for a wide range of applications. Its uses range from pickling of steel, regeneration of ion exchangers , effluent treatment to preparation of gelatine, glucose and maltose. Hydrochloric acid also plays an important role in many chemical synthesis.

Hydrochloric acid is obtained as a by-product during many chlorination and fluorination reactions.

RH + Cl2  -> RCl + HCl

RCl+ HF   -> RF + HCl

Large quantities of hydrochloric acid are also formed during the pyrolysis of EDC necessary for the preparation of VCM, the precursor of PVC.

Very pure hydrochloric acid can be produced by a direct synthesis of chlorine with hydrogen, both obtained via electrolysis of common salt.

Cl2  + H2   -> 2 HCl

After absorption of the gaseous hydrochloric acid in water, HCl 30 - 36 % is available for application in sensitive sectors such as the treatment of drinking water or the preparation of food stuffs.
